Rigid Garage Floor Tiles

16 10 2008

When it comes to garage flooring tiles, there are generally two types available.  The first is the soft variety which is usually peel and stick tiles.  The second variety is the rigid type and these tiles use a locking mechanism to join them together.  In this article we are going to focus on the latter type.

Most garage floors are made of concrete which is obviously cold and hard.  Garage floor coverings, including tiles, have made those cold hard places a little more enjoyable.  Rigid garage floor tiles offer many benefits including:

  • Engineered to withstand the toughest mechanical environments and is not affected by petroleum products and most automotive chemicals.
  • Installs in hours, not days - you simply snap your floor together over any solid swept surface. No glues, no paints, NO VAPOROUS TOXIC FUMES.
  • Numerous styles and colors to chose from. Create your own custom design.
  • Full-Suspension Flooring provides great anti-fatigue and insulation barrier between you and the cold, hard floor.
  • Built to handle extreme roll capacities. Will support floor jacks, tool boxes and jack stands.
  • Edging easily snaps into the garage floor to create a smooth transition.
  • Made in the USA with a 15 year manufacturer’s warranty.

Let’s look at some of those benefits in more detail.  First, they are engineered to withstand chemicals that could destroy the tile.  This is not true of all garage floor tiles on the market today.  RaceDeck is the leading garage tile manufacturer and they are the only product we trust to provide years of use and enjoyment.  They also back up their claims with an amazing 15 year warranty.

The true beauty of a rigid garage tile is that they are so simple to install that just about anyone can do it.  The best part is when your done you don’t have to worry about your floor failing like an epoxy garage floor could.  Quick installation that is much safer than epoxy is a huge benefit to most homeowners.

RaceDeck garage floor tiles come in 8 colors, 2 sizes, various patterns and finishes.  With so many options available you can make an amazing garage floor in no time.  Check out these images, you won’t get this look with any other products.

Unlike other garage floor products, rigid garage floor tiles are free-floating.  This provides an impressive anti-fatigue benefit which will make spending time in your garage more enjoyable.  In addition, because this floor is not glued to the concrete, it can be removed or changed when needed.

Finally rigid garage floor tiles from RaceDeck are designed to withstand the tough environment of a garage.  Whether it is a car, jack, toolbox or whatever else you through at it, these floors are designed to last and backed with a 15 year warranty.

What is the best garage floor?

18 09 2008

What is the best garage floor is a difficult question to answer.  There generally is no doubt that adding garage flooring is a wise decision.  The added benefits outweigh the cost in most cases.  Inexpensive garage floor protection benefits include:

  • Added warmth to cold floors
  • Anti-fatigue properties
  • Easy clean-up
  • Improved appearance
  • Sound deadening
  • Less dirt tracked into your home
  • And many more…

Opinions will differ among those who have garage flooring as to which is the best garage floor.  The reason for that is quite simple, everyone has different needs.  Cost, style, comfort, safety, and cleanup are some of the aspects of the decision making process.  What is the best garage floor for one may not be the best garage floor for another.

If your looking at the purchase of a garage floor from a strictly cost related basis, then the best garage floor is the rolled garage flooring.  Dollar for dollar, rolled garage flooring is the least expensive per square foot and with different thicknesses and qualities available, you are sure to find a floor to meet your budget needs.

If appearance is the main quality you are looking for then the best garage floor is a tough one to answer.  As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  That being said, the general consensus as to which is the best looking garage floor is usually tile garage floors.  Because most garages are fairly large a single color rolled floor may be too much of one color for some people’s individual taste.  The multicolored tile garage floors help breakup that look with contrasting colors.  In addition, garage floor tiles allow you to design your floor any way you please and many people take advantage of that ability.  Popular patterns include boarders around the perimeter or a check board layout.

When it comes to comfort, generally rolled garage flooring or soft garage floor tiles make the best garage floor.  Many of the other flooring options are made from a hard plastic type material that is more comfortable than plain concrete, but not nearly as comfortable as the rolled garage floor.

If safety and cleanup are your primary reasons for looking into garage flooring, the best garage floor for you is most likely rolled garage flooring.  One of the biggest benefits of rolled garage flooring is that it is easy to clean.  Aside of the seems, rolled garage flooring does not allow spills or leaks to penetrate to the floor below.  That means spills are contained to the rolled garage flooring where they can be easily taken care of.  In addition because rolled garage flooring is not secured to the floor it can be dragged out of the garage and sprayed down occasionally with a garden hose.  Rigid garage floor tiles are usually solid or perforated.  The perforated types allows spills to drain below the tile to the floor below.  This can be beneficial in some applications but ultimately the difficulty becomes cleaning up spills below the tile.  Unless you pull up part of the floor, the spills will remain under the floor forever.  Even solid tiles are not installed tight enough where spills don’t leak down between the seems.

Everyone has their own reasons for wanting to install garage flooring, but deciding which is the best garage floor is strictly up to the individual making the purchase.

Garage Floors - How Much Do I Need?

4 09 2008

Garage floors make a nice addition to any home and they are a fantastic home improvement project.  There are many types of garage flooring with the most popular being rolled garage flooring.  With the wide variety of textures, colors and thicknesses available, choosing the right garage floor can be a difficult task.

If you are looking for Garage Flooring That’s Inexpensive and Easy To Install, check out our article on that subject.  If you are more interested in Garage Floor Tiles, we have an article on that too.  Whatever type of flooring you choose you will need to determine how much flooring you need to purchase.  If you have a rectangular or square garage, that calculation is quite simply length x width.  For example, if your garage is 24′ x 20′, then you simply take 24 x 20 and determine that your garage is 480 square feet.  If you were going to purchase rolled garage floors then the your best option would be to choose a roll that is 10 feet wide and purchase the length you need for each 10 foot increment.  In our example 2 rolls of garage flooring that is 10 feet wide by 24 feet long would be perfect.  But what if you garage is 24′ x 22′?  If that is the case the best option would be to purchase rolled garage flooring that is 7.5′ wide and then buy 3 rolls at 24′ long.

In each of the examples above it is important to know the width and length of your garage.  Many of the garage floors available comes in various patterns and are generally rolled out from the back of the garage to the front.  By doing this, the seem will run along the length of the garage.  To determine the width of the rolls you will need you simply take the width of your garage and divide it by the various widths of flooring available.  The most common widths of rolled garage flooring are 7.5′, 8′, 9′ and 10′.  If your garage is 22′ wide then the best choice would be 3 rolls of the 7.5′ width flooring.  That would give you the least amount of waste when you install your floor.  Three rolls at 7.5′ wide would cover an area 22.5′ wide providing only 6 inches of waste.

Once you determine the width of the roll out flooring you need, the length is easy.  Purchase each of the rolls in the total length of the garage.  For example, if your garage is 24′ long then you will need each of your rolls to be 24′.  But what if the necessary length of garage flooring is not available?  The better garage flooring retailers like StoreItWell.com can special order customers the perfect length of flooring you need.  This eliminates waste and generally saves you money.  Because there are usually custom order cut charges, it is best to order 1 long run of flooring instead of 3 separate rolls.  In our 24′ long garage, that would mean a total roll length of 72′, (24′x3).

Calculating the right amount of garage flooring can be a difficult task but one that is extremely important if you are planning on this impressive home improvement project.  You don’t want to buy too much and waste your money but you also don’t want to buy too little and end up short on the job.  The right calculations are important to doing the job .  If you are not comfortable determining how much you need, ask for help.  We will be more than willing to help you order the perfect amount.

Simple Garage Floors, Protection and Beauty

27 08 2008

There are many types of garage floors available today.  The most popular types are rolled garage floors, tile garage floors and epoxy paint garage floors.  All of them have their advantages and disadvantages but for the purposes of this article, we are going to focus on the simplest types of garage floors, rolled and tile.  Epoxy garage floors are quite impressive in appearance but the time and effort involved in installing one is best left to the experts.

The most cost effective and easiest garage floors to install are the rolled variety.  They are inexpensive and look great.  However, many people are drawn to rolled garage floors because of their easy installation.  The average homeowner can install their own garage floor in just a couple hours with basic tools.  Rolled garage floors come in a variety of colors and textures that will suit anyone’s tastes.  The most common textures are ribbed, diamond plate, coin and levant.

Garage floor textures play an important part in the garage floor decision process.  Besides the great appearance a new garage floor can add to your home, they also provide anti-fatigue benefits, sound deadening qualities, and improved safety.  Ribbed style garage floors allow liquids to be channeled away which helps keep your floor safe from spills.  All textures, including ribbed garage floors, offer some anti-slip properties.  However, it is important to keep in mind that manufacturers do not consider their garage floors to be slip resistant with one stating, “There is no substitute for keeping a clean, well-maintained floor.”

Tiles are also becoming quite popular with regard to garage floors.  They offer many of the same qualities of rolled garage flooring but with a entirely different look.  Tile garage floors are usually mixed and matched to give a checker board pattern.  Some homeowners even create boarders and other designs in their garage floors.

The Race Day Peel & Stick Tiles are one of the easiest garage floor tiles to install.  You simply peel the backing and apply the tile to the prepared garage floor.

The peel and stick type of garage floor tiles are better than the rigid types of garage floor tiles simply because they prevent dead spot under the floor.

Whether installing a rolled garage floor or tile garage floor, the low cost and impressive benefits make it a quality home improvement project that will add beauty, safety and value to your home.

17 07 2008

If you have a garage you already know that there are many benefits to owning it. It gives you a place to protect your car from the elements, a place to store all your “stuff”, a place to work on your tractor, car or any other project that you may have going on, and if you are like my family it makes a great place for parties. So if owning a garage already has all these benefits, why would you want to improve it with garage flooring?

Our Garage Flooring vs. Garage Floor Epoxy

10 07 2008

When it comes to garage flooring, many of you may have heard or seen the epoxy floor coverings that are available today, possibly even on TV. You see what looks like a simple process and beautiful results. What you don’t see or hear is that most epoxy floor coverings fail and the process is extremely time consuming and difficult. The biggest reason the epoxy garage floors fail is adhesion, they simply don’t stick well unless the surface has been properly prepped. That doesn’t sound bad, right? Wrong. Here are some of the things you need to do to “prep” for an epoxy floor:

  • Be sure the concrete is dry. This does not mean to the naked eye but truly dry.
  • Remove ANY and ALL chemicals, grease, oil, etc. Remember, we are talking about a garage. All of these items are abundant in the garage and VERY difficult to remove.
  • If the floor was previously painted, all the paint should be removed. Good luck with that.
  • The garage surface may need to be ground down to expose the clean concrete underneath.

If you decided you still want an epoxy garage floor and you think you can handle the hours of surface preparation necessary to do the job, there are some other areas of concern you may want to consider. Even if the surface has been properly prepped and cleaned there is still a good chance the floor will fail. Here are some other possible problems associated with epoxy floor failures:

  • The concrete was not completely dried. Water is a major problem with epoxy garage floors.
  • Humidity can cause problems with epoxy and cause the floor to fail.
  • The epoxy must cure quickly. If not, blisters in the floor may appear.
  • Salts that are deposited from the concrete as it cures can effect the bonding of an epoxy garage floor.
  • Surfaces generally expand and contract with heating and cooling. These expansions and contractions can cause cracks in the epoxy flooring. Once there are cracks the floor loses its protective coating and it nice appearance.

Now that we’ve discussed garage floor epoxy, let’s discuss the garage floors available on our website, http://StoreItWell.com. We offer various garage flooring options including rolled and tile. These floors are generally inexpensive, beautiful and made to last. The best part is they are easy to install and perform well under most conditions.

Some of the advantages to using our rolled garage flooring are:

  • Easy to install. Surface preparation is minimal for our rolled garage flooring and basically includes simply sweeping the floor and wiping up any spills or chemicals for installation
  • Long lasting. Did you know that Better Life Technology Products have a five year limited warranty?
  • Easy to clean. Simply wipe up spills and your done. You can even spray down the floor with a garden hose. Because the rolled garage flooring is a floating floor, you can bring it outside for a good cleaning and drying and simply set it back in the garage.
  • It looks great!

It is quite clear that epoxy floors are not for everyone. But if you want an easy to install, long lasting, professional looking garage floor, our garage flooring products may be the best choice for you.
